Wintertime is coming

So, Mammoth opens this week… Mt. High and Boreal are already open… it’s raining and cold* in Southern California and my heart is just aching to get out there.  I got SSX3 for the PS2, it’s a snowboarding game and I’m addicted to it.  The songs are ripe, the gameplay is just stupidly fun and I’m having a blast doing things I’ll never be able to do in real life.  I really can’t explain how excited I am about the new season and new snow.

I love the cold, the rain, the snow, the clouds, the chill in the air and everything else about snowboarding season.  All this begs the question, why do I live in Socal if I like weather?  It hardly drops below 70 around here, never snows, barely rains and is in general quite boring.  I can sit bundled up on a cold ridge all day long watching clouds roll by without a care in the world, now that I think about it that actually sounds like a damn near perfect day.  I can’t however, stand to be hot, sweaty and sticky just sitting around on a beach or pool or something trying to cool off.

What do you prefer?

*Southern California cold == temperatures <70 degrees, please don’t confuse this with REAL cold as defined outside of Socal.

Smelly memories

For the next few days Jarr and I will be taking part in a high altitude physiology study.  The doctor doing the testing seems really cool, he’s even promised to pass along some movie loops/jpg’s of our heart/lungs.  Should be interesting to find out, well anything.

We should be done with the studies by Saturday afternoon, which means we have Saturday night to do whatever.  Jarr and I decided to hike to the top of the research station facility and camp on top of the peak at 14,246ft.  Should be colder than shit, so I was unpacking some of my snowboarding gear for the trip - baclava, thick winter gloves and since this is about the first time I’d opened my snowboard bag since last season ended so violently (see movie 11megs) it brought back a lot of good memories, the smells of my bag (probably needs to be aired out) just made me think of the long day trips to Mammoth, and the crappy conditions at the SoCal resorts.  It made me wonder what new stuff this year’s snowboarding will bring.

Aside from my new crash helmet that is.
